Types of Internet Service

Emery Telcom DSL

Provides Internet service over telephone lines using frequencies not in use for phone calls. The telephone line provides a secure, unshared, constant connection to the Internet.

Emery Telcom Cable

Provides Internet service over cable television lines using frequencies not in use for television channels. The cable line provides a secure, reliable connection to the Internet.

Wireless ISP

Provides Internet through the air using radio frequencies broadcast from a line of site tower. The wireless ISP purchases Internet bandwidth from a local telephone provides to the tower. This bandwidth is then shared by all customers using the tower. The signal is broadcast to the tower across the air to a fixed point in the home. This is not mobile. No benefits if already wired.

  • line of sight necesssary; trees, buildings, and landscape can cause problems.

 


Cellular Internet

Provides Internet through the air using cellular tower base stations. The bandwidth at the tower is shared by all customers using cellular Internet and cellular phones. Its distance and speeds are highly dependent upon the amount of customers using the tower. This can cause speed and access issues, especially during peak usage times. Good for mobile applications.

Satellite Internet

Provides Internet across satellites. Usually involves expensive equipment and lower speeds. Good for remote areas.

  • additional latency for travel to satellite and back
