Elaine Jewkes' Caramel Dumplings

Caramel Sauce
1 c. sugar
1 qt. water (4 cups)
1/2 cube butter
1 tsp. vanilla
 
Dumplings
2 1/4 c. Bisquick
2/3 c. milk
1/2 c. sugar  
 
Melt sugar in heavy saucepan-stir constantly so it won't get too brown as it will become bitter. When melted, pour in 1 qt. water. Be careful it will bursts into HOT steam!!  Add butter and vanilla. Make recipe for dumplings. Drop into boiling liquid. Reduce heat; cook uncovered 10 min. Cover; cook 10 min. longer.  Serve with cream or half & half. Beware this is extremely rich and delicious!!
